Welcome to the Year 5 class page, please keep reading to find out all the information you need regarding curriculum, homework, reading and PE. Throughout the year, we will provide photo updates on our work, trips and activities in class. Please keep an eye on SeeSaw for daily updates and Parent App for important messages.

The children’s PE day is on a Wednesday.

Reading

Children will read at least once per week with an adult in school please ensure that your child’s reading records are up-to-date and brought into school on their allocated reading day. At SVP, we use Reading Plus to achieve accelerated progress in reading from the children. Please ensure that children are accessing the programme for at least 30 minutes a week at home.

Each cohort will have a suite of core texts that will form the depth study for the academic year. These texts represent a promise from the school to every pupil that it serves of the literature that it is committed to studying throughout a pupil’s school journey. These texts have been mapped carefully to ensure a breadth of experiences, authors, texts and themes is addressed across the Primary years. In addition to these texts, there are core poems that each year group will study in detail. Other texts that will be studied in part will be outlined within the curriculum. This spine represents the core texts for depth study only. The literature spine has been harmonised with the wider curriculum, where appropriate.

We use CUSP reading at SVP, please see the overview of the year below.

Writing

We use CUSP to enable our Year 5 class to become accomplished writers. By using an approach of revisiting units of work children will be able to build on misconceptions and build on previous pieces of writing.

Maths

For Maths, we use White Rose Maths to help plan and deliver Maths. We used an approach of concrete, pictorial and abstract learning approaches to help children achieve mastery in Maths.

Spelling

We use CUSP spelling to ensure that children know all the required spelling rules, this will build on previous practice from Year 4 to help ensure that children achieve the best possible outcomes for their transition to Year 6 and secondary.

CUSP Curriculum overview

When teaching foundation subjects we use CUSP curriculum, which builds on research to support cognitive load theory and helps enhance the children’s vocabulary. Please see the yearly overview below and links to specific subject pages.
