Year 3
Welcome to Year 3 (Class Name: Dr Suess)
3S – Mr Jackson, Miss Travis and Ms Blowes
Welcome
A very warm welcome to the Year 3 class page. Here you will find lots of useful information, an overview of our curriculum and details about our daily routines.
Reading
We follow the CUSP Curriculum reading spine throughout the year. Core texts will form the depth study for the academic year. These texts represent a promise from the school to every pupil that it serves of the literature that it is committed to studying throughout a pupil’s school journey. These texts have been mapped carefully to ensure a breadth of experiences, authors, texts and themes is addressed across the Primary years. In addition to these texts, there are core poems that each year group will study in detail. Other texts that will be studied in part will be outlined within the curriculum. This spine represents the core texts for depth study only. The literature spine has been harmonised with the wider curriculum, where appropriate.
Home Reading
All children will bring home a home reading book. They will have a set day when they will read with a teacher or learning coach in school. Your child can change their reading books sooner if required.
It is important that you read with your child at least three times per week. We strive to foster a love of reading in your child and you can support us by talking to them about their book and motivating them by listening to them read aloud.
Our Reading Records contain guidance on reading with your child as well as questions which can be asked to build their reading comprehension skills. Please make a brief comment in your child’s Reading Record.
Below are the 50 recommended reading books for Year 3.
Writing
We follow the CUSP Writing Curriculum (below) which is carefully sequenced to ensure children become confident and competent writers. In Year 3, your child will continue to develop across the different strands of writing: imagination and ideas, audience and purpose, handwriting or typing, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
Spelling
We use the CUSP Curriculum for spelling which has been purposefully built around the principles of evidence-led practice. This is to ensure that pupils acquire deep knowledge about the English spelling system and that this learning endures.
The CUSP Spelling curriculum is organised into 2-week blocks, with each block covering a particular set of key concepts, including spelling patterns, etymology and morphology and reasoning about spelling. These blocks are made up of three lessons per week: 2 x 15 minute (minimum) discrete Spelling lessons and 1 x Spelling starter for the final Writing lesson of each week.
Maths
We follow a mastery maths programme and use the White Rose Planning resources. Children are supported in a variety of approaches to their maths work to ensure sound mathematical understanding. The approaches used are as follows:
Concrete – children should have the opportunity to use concrete objects and manipulatives to help them understand what they are doing.
Pictorial – alongside concrete objects, children should use pictorial representations. These representations can then be used to help reason and solve problems.
Abstract – both concrete and pictorial representations should support children’s understanding of abstract methods
An overview of the maths blocks can be viewed below.
